The door opens and there is the future. Radical transformations are much rarer than iterative ones. Even rarer are radical transformations that are strategically perfectly crafted and end up working well. Such a success story was experienced by the German DAX-30 company Merck. It involved nothing less than a complete repositioning: away from being a well-known pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturer and toward becoming a vibrant science and technology company with a broad but coherent portfolio.
