Even rarer are radical transformations that are strategically perfectly crafted and end up working well. Such a success story was experienced by the German DAX-30 company Merck. It involved nothing less than a complete repositioning: away from being a well-known pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturer and toward becoming a vibrant science and technology company with a broad but coherent portfolio.
